PUTUMAYO PRESENTS SOUTH AFRICA |
| |

Putumayo's latest is one of the better releases in the label's new trend toward tradition. Organica again, it's obvious that genre-bending has for the moment been shunted to the side in favor of simply capturing the sounds of a culture. In this case, the culture is that of South Africa, and the sampling of world-pop is delightful indeed. Bubbling over with a sunny disposition (but not cloying by any means), "South Africa" is a gem of finger-tapping melody and hook. Bright, light and substantial, the songs herein display the power to elevate mood and drop a little sunshine from the so-called Dark Continent right into your heart by way of your ears. Honest music whose sincerity shines as bright as the melodies, the songs on Putumayo's latest percolate with a friendly catchiness that make them impossible not to like, regardless of your taste in music. Only the hard-hearted could resist the allure. It's a come on in an join the fun even if you're a stranger kind of vibe. The upbeat mien of these songs is a spiritual salve.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
