NONPLACE 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION (NONPLACE)

Some laid back sweetness is right here waiting for you. A lush mix of chillout, downtempo, jazz and electri-jazz unfolds in luxuriant bloom across these delicious tracks. Celebrating the variety of artists that have graced the Nonplace label for the last ten years, this anniversary disc dishes out the supple sounds of relaxation and transcendence. And, I am joyful to report, there is none of the dodgy generic new age crap you'll find gathering dust in the buy-it-cheap bin next to the actual good CDs at ye olde record store. This is solid, quality musical expression. And the variety is also welcome. A good example is the way the jazz manifests itself here. There is some quite traditional sounding jazz - a delight to the ears. But there are also some plainly electronic pieces whose hearts are very much centered in jazz, and it keeps that same old jazz soul going but with a post-modern edge. And that's just the jazz. I should make quite plain the fact that this is not just a selection of jazz tracks. I mention those by way of example. There's plenty of straight-up downspeed electronica chiller diller wonderfulness grooving through this disc. It's a pinnacle of diversity and quality for fans of mental stimu-relaxation.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
