AXIS TRIO "ANTHEM" (ACCRETIONS)

Axis Trio's experimental jazz release "Anthem" could indeed be said to be an anthem of sorts. Call it the anthem full of anthems of accessibility meets experimentation. If you don't like jazz, I'll grant you that this isn't going to change your mind, but not because it's bad jazz. It's quite GOOD jazz. It won't change your mind because it has all that distinctive quirk that makes jazzheads love jazz and those who don't like jazz make a point of avoiding it. The free floating focused drift of Axis Trio's "Anthem" is a testament to mood and musicality. Instrumental prowess dominates, as do songwriting skills and, no doubt, improvisational impetus. It may be smoke and mood, but it sure ain't smoke and mirrors. This is the real deal.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
