OVERDRIVE: A DJ MIX BY APHRODITE - (FEED RECORDS) |
| |

One of my favorite tracks on Aphrodite’s new DJ mix, “Overdrive,” is also a great example (one, at least) of why this batch of drum and bass tracks have a personality worth noting. Bad drum and bass can be a mind numbing perpetuity of bass thumps and hyper drums with nothing to really distinguish one track from another. But this is good stuff here. “We Can’t Stop” by Distorted Minds, the aforementioned standout track, is drum and bass with an aggressive hip-hop vocals attached. Ironically, another standout is “Can’t Stop (Aphrodite Remix)” by Stevie Hyper; this one brings in an unexpected reggae tinge thanks to the toke-inspiring vocals. A stunner is the use of melodic trance stylings on “Precinct 13” by Accidental Heroes. And that’s just a few examples. Speaking of melody, that’s another thing I appreciate about Aphrodite’s comp; not all D&B really seems to have an orientation toward melodic (other than whatever melody exists in the bass moves). “Stalker (Benny Page Remix)” by Aphrodite himself layers the drum and base skeleton over ethereal melodies. “Overdrive” is an accomplishment. It’s fast and energetic and sure to have a reaction on the dance floor much like tossing a bunch of ravers on a metal floor and running electricity through it. Kickin’ and jumpy, unfettered and catchy, Aphrodite’s D&B mix is a bottom thumpin’, high hat rattling set of yummy tracks. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
