MUSHROOM JAZZ 5 (OM)

J. Boogie’s Dubtronic Science commences the set with “Afros in Ya,” a jazzy bit of dubbishness that segues to “The Tribute” by Colossus, which resembles nothing so much as hip-hop. “Autumn Evening” by Sound Providers continues the dub-rooted vein kept in force so far but with quiet, retro elegant jazz as the flavor. DJ Numark’s “Chau 2NA Comin’ Thru” returns to hip-hop flavor and Red Astaire’s “Come Down” gets an almost reggae world soul vibe. “Flow” from Zion I is more ethereal (we’re still in dubish downtempo land) and DJ Spinna keeps it chilled with “Nostalgia.” Mark Farina creates a sort of sample-based funk-hop with house tones on “Cali Spaces.” Blu Bizness’ “Funky for You” continues the laid back sample-dub-groove; “Puttin’ in Work” by Wee Bee Foolish continues in a similar vein. DJ Dez makes it a matter of soulful relaxed house on “Hollywood.” Ethereal night jazz coolness pervades on one of the disc’s stronger tracks, “Music Makes the World Go Round” by Jazz Liberatorz. “Maintain” by The Strange Fruit Project adds piano jazz to the track set and Presto’s “Back in 92” kicks it with a stoned and funky groove. Girl ‘tude hip-hop takes the stage on “You Like My Style” by Shortie No Mas. The Earl “Here’s the Proof” takes the ‘tude retro on this jazzy piece and Jonny Alpha keeps tha jazziness flowin’. “The Kick Clap” by Starving Artist Crew could be described as dub jazz while Pete Rock’s “It’s a Love Thing” is more nighttime-ish hip-hop beats. Thes One’s “The Yacht Club” adds some vox to the hip-hop flow and The Foreign Exchange brings it home with the catchy downtempo of “Nic’s Groove.” Honestly, I’m not sure why this disc has jazz in the title since what I (not that I’m an expert) identify as jazz only pops up occasionally on here. All of it could be called downtempo; there’s a fair amount of dubbishness. Hip-hop has a strong presence. But jazz? I dunno. At any rate, it’s a decent set of tracks for those inclined toward the above-described styles. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
