Within a certain range of flavor, Tijuana Sessions Vol. 3 from Nortec Collective, is fairly eclectic, which is to say, the tracks don't all run together or sound the same. It's also fair to say there's a dose of originality and creativity afoot within the tunage herein described. At the core, this is either world-tinged house or housey world music, whichever way you want to look at it. The beats range from upbeat house drive to hooky mid-tempo grooves and certainly have more pull on the listener than some of the more derivative house spilling out of the dance bins at the record store. Helping out on this front is the edge of distinctiveness exhibited by the CD; the world aspect in the music's influences gives these tracks more noticeable personality than in straightforward house music and enhance the textures of the songs. There's solidity to these compositions that eludes much of the churn-em-out "quality" that infects too much of the world-categoried CDs out there. There's some thoughtfulness that reveals stronger songwriting motivations than you'd expect on the generic stuff. While this Latino-laced music isn't the epitome of dance hall daringness, it is a competently executed listen that's worth a spin or two.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn

The reviewer missed the boat on this review and it is obvious that he did not "get" what the Nortec Collective is all about. To lump them into a world music ghetto and dismiss them as "housey world music" is way off the mark. Forget what he has to say and listen for yourself.
