ARMIN VAN BUUREN - SHIVERS (ULTRA) |
| |

While I'd rather have had more of the melody come from
hooky instrumental melodies than vocal lines, it's a
relatively minor complaint and there's no doubting
that "Shivers" is an apt name for Van Buuren's new
release of original Van Buuren-composed tracks. As is
typical of the tracks the DJ chooses for his mixes,
his own compositions are defined heavily by lushness,
texture and ethereal ambience, and even though I'm
more inclined toward trance of a non-vocal nature, the
voices chosen are lovely and a perfect complement to
these noteworthy songwriting qualities with which Van
Buuren infuses these tunes. An interesting surprise is
his occasional departure from trance in this batch of
tracks. A downtempo but energy-buzzed piece,
"Golddigger" moves with fierce beauty and infectious
thickness. Another startling number is the more
breakbeat-oriented "Gypsy," which is especially
ethereal and whose beats are definitely grabbing. One
of the standout tracks is the album's centerpiece, a
surprisingly lengthy, building and progressive number
by the name of "Zocalo." Regardless of what particular
path Van Buuren is exploring on any given track
herein, the listener can rest assured he's in good
hands. -- review by Kristopher Upjohn
