Alex Gold's ironically titled artistd debut (ironic
because he is returning from a long recuperation from
severe back injuries that left him physically ailing
and out of the music scene for a while) is driven by
downtempo but groove-infected breakbeats and distant,
ethereal melodies, creating an ambience more designed
for chilling out to than dancing, but, hey, what's
wrong with that? At any rate, these well-executed
instrumental doings find themselves topped by smooth
vocal contributions, all mixing together to create a
lovely if not entirely exceptional, group of tracks to
trip out to. The music is composed with talent and
artistic sensibility, to be sure, but personally, I
can't say I find it overly engaging. I wouldn't
necessarily take it out if it was playing; in fact, I
could groove to it quite nicely. But rarely would it
be my first choice off the CD rack to pop in the
player, either. Others, I suspect, will get more out
of this. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
