Static Revenger is our kind of super hero. He battles boredom and bad music with a sweep of his sonic cape, and his super powers keep evolving and expanding the longer he flies around. His latest sequel showcases the romantic interest, with a collection of downtempo love songs on a CD EP called "Love Song Surprise." Fittingly enough for this Hallmark-included but can't get away from the love them time of year, we had a change to talk to the man inside the Static Revenger suit, Dennis White.
Hi Dennis!!! Thanks so much for answering these questions for a snazzy feature on raves.com and djfix.com
thanks for having me, i appreciate it.
First off, tell us about the title of this album. Were you were writing another song and, "surprise" it became a love song?
I love the poetic cadence of the words, love song surprise, and I wanted a really strikingly obvious title for this collection of, uh...well, they're love songs, really- there's no other way around it. And at this point in my career, I'm not known for this style of music at ALL, although I've been writing and producing in this style my whole life. So...SURPRISE! I think that the real surprise to people is that the songs don't suck...
How did that song get to be used at Britney Spear's wedding? Did you get to go? Are you secretly a big Brittany fan?
BWAH! Uh... no. A music supervisor named Jim Black reached out and explained that they were doing a show on Britney's wedding, and the she just loved my song, and could they use it. And then there was the actual renumeration mentioned, and well, HELL YES! Let's wish those young kids well. I was really appreciative of that on a lot of levels, not the least of which was that the experience served as a wake up call to me that I had a lot of this kind of music lying around doing nothing, so i used the license fee that i got to finish and promote the LP.
Had you, Ramin and Duke ever collaborated before?
we've been working together since college. i love that we still do. to have that kind of history with people and still enjoy working together is really magical to me.
What was the process like working with them, given that Duke lives in Harlem?
ftp, baby... and sometimes we'd literally be on iChat, at a piano, singing back and forth to each other, making suggestions in real time. it was brilliant.
What (or who) was the inspiration for you to produce an album of downtempo love songs? Not exactly what you're known for producing in the past...
(answered above, i think)
Are there any special stories behind and of the songs you can tell us?
special stories- yes. tell you? nope.
Speaking of stories, is that black and white photo of you at your "new" piano? I seem to remember a funny little story about how you recently ended up with that (or your most recent) piano, care to share?
Ramin came over my house, and was just FIXATED on the fact that i didn't have an acoustic piano in the house, and simply would NOT stop talking about it, and i said, 'dude- if i put a piano in that corner, then i have no place for my wurli (vintage elec piano), so unless you are going to redecorate my house, pipe down! so... i thought that was the end of it until he showed up later with this whole schematic of where everything was meant to be rearranged, and thus... now it was ME that couldn't get the idea out of my head. 10 in on craigs list and it was here the next day.
What's your favorite brand of Scotch?
oban 14 year
Thanks Static Revenger, you'll always be our superhero!!! :)
thank YOU...
