Legendary DJ/remixer Paul Oakenfold has been busy... in fact, in the span of one week, we found out not only was he annoucing his first ever American DJ residency at the N9NE Group's RAIN Nightclub in the Palms Casino Resort in Vegas, but he was also still going strong at Pacha in Ibiza, Spain - the location of his unforgettable Perfecto residency.
Vegas, baby, Vegas! Now finally the US gets to experience regular doses of Oakenfold and Perfecto magic! Beginning Saturday, August 30th, "Paul Oakenfold Presents: Perfecto Las Vegas" will take place every Saturday through Spring 2009. Featuring everything from video & audio entertainment, to performance artists & props, "Perfecto Las Vegas" will promises take clubbers on a "musical & visual journey from Planet Earth to Planet Perfecto." The stage will look like a bridge to a spaceship & the video, audio & lighting will simulate the actual take off from Planet earth. Gogo girls & other humanoid type characters dressed in "Perfecto" Starfleet uniforms will help elevate the club's energy while angels fly over the crowd.
Over the top? C'mon, this is Vegas and Paul Oakenfold... did you really expect anything less?
We wanted to know the why's and how's, and so jumped at the chance to for a interview, plus you can read his Pacha-centric answers below that
too!
Jen: How and why did you decide to make RAIN your 1st US club residency?
Paul Oakenfold: I had been offered various residencices in New York and Los
Angeles, but I thought the Palms casino was the right choice for a
number of reasons, primarily the location - it is an international
destination that is fast becoming the new Ibiza, and everyone at one
time or another seems to want to go through Vegas.
Will you be living in Vegas for the duration?
I will be commuting, as will many people.
Is there anything special or different you'll be doing for this gig
because its Vegas baby, Vegas?!
A lot! The night is called Planet Perfecto and it takes you to
somewhere where you have never been. We have brought in Vello Virkhaus,
who will be doing the visuals, he is the top VJ in the world and has
worked with Gwen Stefani and Coldplay. We have also brought in Marc
Brickman to produce the show, who works with Pink Floyd and Roger
Walters. In terms of music, it will be the only club in Vegas playing
this type of sound, and we are promoting it internationally.
There's the saying, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas... you have
any crazy or funny things happen there to you yet?
I can't tall you can I! What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!
As a special guest on the Madonna tour, what kind of performances will
you be doing?
I'm there to get the crowd going, it's a big cross-section of
people who go to her shows, so the set will be more commercial.
Do you ever get tired of DJing and/or the music/club biz... you think
you'll ever retire?
I don't get tired of DJing, but my main job is now in film, so
if anything, I enjoy it all the more now.
Let's say its the first night of your Perfecto Presents at RAIN, what
would be something/someone they could have for you in your dressing
room/backstage that would put a HUGE smile on your face?
Friends and family.
Thanks Paul!!!

OAKENFOLD PACHA INTERVIEW
from Kate at IMD
Q: Do you have any special memories of Pacha from over the years?
A: The Perfecto residency, which was a big success, and started the trend of big DJs having their own nights at Pacha.
Q: When did you first visit the Pure Pacha?
A: Many many years ago!
Q: Do you find yourself playing in any way different when you are @ Pacha?
A: Not really. Every show is important. Educate but also entertain.
Q: How do you see the scene in Ibiza 2008?
A: From a musical point of view, I think the spectrum is getting wider and wider. We are seeing rock plus hip hop have a strong presence on the island, but of course dance music is still at the forefront of the scene.
Q: Do you have an all-time favourite Ibiza record?
A: I have many, but the record that stands out was when Perfecto had its residency at Pacha. I was given a record by Danny Whittle (Pacha’s brand manager) which was Rui Da Silva's record 'Touch Me' six months before it came out. I played it every week.
Q: What is your perception of the Pacha crowd?
A: Good looking, well dressed, and how they love to dance!
Q: How do you think Pacha is still going strong after 30 years in the business?
A: A great management team, visionaries, and a total understanding of how a great club should work.
Q: What can people expect from your gig?
A: First and foremost, a fantastic night! New music, some Ibiza classics and a great, great vibe. I'm really looking forward to it!
Q: How is the rest of the year looking for you?
A: I am currently in Los Angeles scoring a new movie called Humboldt Park, then I go to Ibiza to do some shows… then I go on tour supporting Madonna on her world tour, and then I start work on the next film, a British gangster movie called The Heavy.
Q: Can you give us a big track for the summer?
A: Robert Vadney: "Away From You".
