interview questions by Vass

Now that we're well into this year, we thought we'd catch up with a few of our favorite DJs, artists, and producers, and see what their thoughts were on the last year, and what they have coming up for the rest of this one!

Name: Darude
Location: Beatland

· Looking back on last year, how was it for you?

2008 was great for me, I spun a good number of great gigs, about 50 all together, and I was busy promoting my new album 'Label This!' and singles 'I Ran (So Far Away)', 'My Game' and 'In The Darkness' in different countries. Now that I got my album done I've been concentrating a little more on the gigs and remixes. One track that I remixed is out already, Kenneth Thomas' - Stronger Creature, a vocal trancer with several good remixes in the package, it's out on Talla 2XLC's label Tetsuo.

· What was your highlight?

I got to work with amazing people, one of them being Blake Lewis, with who I made a charity track 'Selfless' for Dance4Life. Blake also sings on 'I Ran'. We'll probably do something else together in the future as well. My US tour was great, saw quite many cities, and it's still going on on the 2009. I had my buddy Weirdness with me VJing live and Randy Boyer, a great dj and producer from Connecticut, opening for me as well at many of those gigs, and we all were really happy how that all worked. Smooth and seamless vibe and flow!

· And lowlight?

Finland didn't get all the medals in the Olympic Games that they should've.

· Strangest or funniest memory?

An afterparty set at one of the Miss Mauritius 2008 preview tour stops. I had front row seats to check out the beauties, which was very nice indeed, and then when the official part of the night was done, they turned the place to a massive party and I spun a proper set for a crazy and fun Mauritian crowd! Good times!

· In five words - last year was the year of:

Celebration, sorrow, gigs, studio, life.

· Tune of 2008?

Biggest tunes to me in 2008 were Gareth Emery - This Is That, Alex Kunnari - Unstable, JS16 - Lights Go Wild, Cerf, Mitiska & Jaren - You Never Said (Randy Boyer & Eric Tadla Remix) and Super8 & Tab - Elektra. There were many many other great tracks, but these pop in my mind first, and definitely made some serious damage wherever I played them. Thanks guys! ;)

· Producer of 2008?

Gareth Emery and Randy Boyer.

· Party of 2008?

The most amazing party of 2008 for me was Laserpoint in Finland. Unbelievably brilliant atmosphere created by great sound, lights, lasers and of course the mad crowd!

· Looking ahead, what have you got planned / coming out in 2009?

I'm working on a couple of remixes for tracks to be released early on the year, one being for Randy Boyer, with who I'm also working on a co-op track. I'm going to MIDEM and WMC to promote my singles and album and I will start pushing a trance/dance project called 'Weirdness', that I'm overseeing and partly producing, to djs and labels, so I'm finally activating my label, Ooops! Records this year. I'll also try and get some new Darude tracks started, and I'll keep pushing and promoing my album 'Label This!' thruout the year. Busy busy busy!

  • Looking back on 2008 how was the year for you?

2008 was without a doubt a great year for me. The support I had was simply amazing and I had the chance to remix many great artists and DJs and I was and still am really pleased that it all worked out really good. Besides having a pretty busy touring schedule and lots of remixes, I still managed to release two singles and kept working on my labels, especially the Kingdom Kome brands. We signed and released some great tracks and DJs and all looks really good for 2009.

  • What was your highlight of 2008?

Reviewing 2008 I must say that whole year was a constant highlight, the support I received around the globe, the response on my bookings and productions and last but not least my Radio Residencies, especially Radio FG Paris. What really made 2008 perfect is the fact that all my friends, my family and people working for and with me supported me and never blamed me for not taking enough care of them. Most of the time I was gone and if I was around I worked so hard, that I had no time to take care of my friends or my family, but no one complained. This year I will def. change this and try hard to findmore time for them.

  • And lowlight?

At the beginning of 2008 if was seriously ill and told that I had to step down in what I do if I want be well again. I managed to continue doing what I did and still do and my health is well on track again.

  • Strangest or funniest memory of 08?

Well, I had a couple of let´s call them nice incidents whilst flying. One story was really freaking me out. Terri B. and I came back from a tour and as we both are not the slimmest examples of human beings, we usually try not to sit next to each other. On this flight she had an aisle seat and I had one next to her in the opposite row. Next to me were to kids, a little one and a teenager. After take off their mom got off her seat and without saying a word this pretty big lady tried to squeeze in to get to her little boy. She got stucked right when she climbed over me. I did not even had time to complain cause my head got stucked between her humungous boops and I was about to suffocate waving my hands in the air to get her away from me. Once she managed to release me, she gave her kids extra food which looked like filled lamb belly. While eating all the fat dripped on me and when Misses big boops tried to get back out I of course got up but to top this story the husband sitting behind me put his foot on my arm rest and started cutting his toe nails with a nail clipper he managed to get on board. That was the moment were I lost it completely and started yelling at this family which ended in Terri B bursting out laughing and crying tears and me almost being handcuffed on board. Only because Terri managed to stop laughing and explained to the flight stuff what happened, nothing happened to me and in the end they apologized and the rest of the flight was calm and relaxed.

  • In five words -  2008 was the year of:

The trust in my intuition

  • Tune of 2008?

Eric Prydz - Pjanno

  • Producer of 2008?

Sebastién Leger

  • Party of 2008?

7th. Birthday of Family in Brisbane

  • Looking ahead, what have you got planned / coming out in 2009?

Well, looking at my schedule I know it will be a very busy year. I already have plenty of remix requests from great DJs and producers, my booking schedule is filling up extremely fast and I plan at least two new singles. The next one will be D.O.N.S. ft. Jocelyn Brown “Somebody Elses Guy 2009”. Besides all this, my aim is to establish my label brands further more, especially the Kingdom Kome ones. We opened an office in NYC a year ago and it is starting to work really well and we will continue to make it more successful. This year, another office will be opened in Australia and later we are planning Miami, but that could well be in 2010. And again, more time for my friends and family even though reading what I just wrote I am not quite sure how to manage that  ;o)

  • Looking back on 2008 how was the year for you?

There was lots of great moments in 2008. Our Dj career really took off and release wise it was good year too. We had change to play around the globe in great parties and do remixes for guys like Paul van Dyk and Ferry Corsten.

  • What was your highlight of 2008?

Must be remixing Paul van Dyk´s ‘New York City’. We really loved the original so it was a big honour for us to be asked to remix it.

  • And lowlight?

It´s the same thing every year and it is called November in Finland. When the days get shorter and shorter and we humans, we need the light. I propose that every citizen of Finland should get one extra month vacation in Thailand for free.

  • Strangest or funniest memory of 08?

When looking back for 2008 I think it was all together funny and strange time.
We met a lot of interesting new people and saw lots of new places. Hope this year will be even more!
