interview by Jennifer Warner

When Iio unofficially debuted their song "Rapture" at New York's Club Twilo way back in 2001, they had an idea of the song's strength, but nothing could have prepared them for the massive response their hit was about to receive. With a fabulous beat composed by producer and songwriter Markus Moser, and a story narrated by the haunting vocals of Nadia Ali, the song was an immediate favorite on dance floors everywhere. "Rapture" became a massive crossover hit, beginning its momentum in Europe, it quickly made its way to the United States and Australia, and eventually into dance clubs all over the world.

So much has happened since then! Iio have just released their new album, Poetica, with its lead single "Kiss You" along with 12 other brand new tracks. Though their name "doesn't really mean anything" according to Nadia (it was inspired by the name of her Sony Viao laptop), their songs are full of meaning and emotion, far from your typical repeated same word sample that haunts much of electronic music.

These Queens, NYC natives continue to make their mark on the dance music world with their talent and style, and we wanted to find out more about what happened to them in between their first hit singles and this new album, and lots more. Read on for our interview by email with Markus of Iio...

JW: Why did you disappear from the music world for four years after Rapture and At The End?

Markus: I was so busy with performing and promoting the songs and then we switched record companies for several times, so there was never the required base for iio to flourish. It also took so long because we wanted to put out the perfect combination of songs. So we created way more than the 16 that made it onto the album.

What made you decide to name your new album Poetica?

we created a mental pot and threw what we both had to offer inside it: I provided the electronic music and nadia wrote poetry: poetica

Where did you record it?

My studio in new york city.

Do any of the songs have special stories behind them?

All songs are based on stories out of nadia's life. Some good, some not so good, I have gotten to realize it myself.

Where do you both live now?

New York city.

If you could be anywhere in the world, instantly right now, for just an hour, where would you go and what would you do there?

New York city. Work.

What are some albums/artists you've listened to and liked lately?

dixie chicks, foo fighters, nelly furtado, madonna, black eyed peas... But mostly I listen to my unreleased songs in the car, to check if what I'm doing in the studio "feels" right outside my work environment.

What inspires you when you produce music?

It was the love for music that got me hooked on listening (on the radio), buying (to own and play at home), playing (clubs), being asked to partake in the making/remixing of a record, and then finally have gotten my own shot at remixing a record. After the first success I then was obsessed to learn producing. I was very lucky because that was a time before home studios, and for major label jobs you had to show receipts for studio you used. So I booked the best studios and hired the best engineers. Being next to them for one week I learned so much from them, no audio school was able to teach within a year. In essence their art lives on within me and I am appreciative of that.

What was the most surprising thing that happened to you as the results of your success?

I was no longer broke.

Do you work on other projects/music aside from Iio?

I develop artists for Made Records: Jimmy James, who already has one record out "Fashionista" and the album follows in August "Jamestown". Liz Scott, Starseeds, and many more.

Will you be touring and performing live - if yes, when and where can your fans look forward to seeing you?

we will be touring again soon, currently I am very much focused on finishing the next iio record, called "Is It Love?", afterwards we shall see.

When you tour, do you ever make special requests for things you‚d like to have backstage or at your hotel?

red bull, vodka, but it always got me in trouble, so now I am asking for a candle and a place to meditate. Just kidding... I don't think we were ever considered difficult with special requests, maybe I drove promoters mad with the equipment requests.

What's up next for Iio?

Hoping to be able to enjoy the album with the rest of the country and the world! working on the next single, the remix album and a new iio album, due next year.

Thank you so much!

thank you!!!
