probably heard of Detroit Techno, Chicago House, Miami Bass... and
if your are a micro-genre freak, maybe even Baltimore Breaks and
South African psychtrance, but are you familiar with Jersey House?
As in New Jersey baybe, and all you really need to know is the name...
Kerri ‘Kaoz’ Chandler, the reigning master of Jersey
house. Chandler 's signature sounds of garage vocals, scorching
piano-led grooves, and deep underground instrumentation, always
maintain the precise balance between his inventive creativity and
This balance is especially apparent in his latest mix CD for Coast2Coast,
as well as in our exclusive interview...
Your new mix CD starts off with one of your own tracks -- is
that a new one?
It's a song that I did with Monique Bingham. We just met each other, but, oh man, we got along so well, like an old married couple. Funnily enough we did the vocals for the song separately, but we still had serious chemistry. She's a genius at word play and the track is on her brand new label Bigga Sounds.
What made you decide to start of this mix with that one?
I wanted to set the tone with something deep and sexy, and thought
it would be an ice breaker for the listener.
What keeps you faithful to house music?
My life reflects the music I make and/or vice versa. When I write
or make a song it really is my day or my mood at the moment that
I'm speaking of. You can tell what has been going on in my life,
up to the minute, if you hear my songs because they all have meanings.
Speaking of faith, could you share some of your spiritual
side with us?
I'm all about energy and karma. I feel that organized religion
corrupts... "Absolute power corrupts absolutely".
What are your beliefs and how do they relate to the music
you make and play?
When I'm in a club the energy is tremendously important. I love
a fun positive vibe and I treat everyone as they treat me. I play
as if it were my last time every time; I give my heart, my all into
What are some of your passions - or just things you like to
do - outside of music?
Kites, film-making, skateboards, and building new gear.
What websites might we find you browsing on any given day?
Southportweekender, Traxsource, Beatport, deephousepage, and youtube.
Let's talk about your DJing and technology. House music isn't
exactly the place you normally see the DJ playing with gadgets!
Tell me about your favorite or latest new toy.
My laser system I think, but I'm working on making it interactive
with the club somehow via beamsplitters. I'm getting into the video
side of things now, as well.
What drew you towards that and using it how you do?
I went to school to be an engineer and to build gear. However,
the DJing part took off, so I like doing both when I can.
Does experimenting with new technology also happen when you
I build synths, equalizers, filters, mixers, preamps, plug-ins,
basically what ever comes to mind that I can use to make my shows
interesting as well as sonically wild. I love making and playing
equipment which I built from scratch.
And when you are mixing a mix CD like Coast2Coast? What software
& hardware did you use to mix the CD?
*Ahh... thatís the fun part. I feel that software that mixes itself
is cheating, so I just used (2)Technics-1200 LTD's, (2)Pioneer CDJ-1000mkII's,
a Pioneer DJM-800 and a Tascam Da-30MKII Dat Machine.
What's up next for you?
I'm starting a film company. It was a hobby of mine for years and
I think I'm ready to turn it into something fun with my music.
Anything else you'd like to say?
I want to say thank you for all the love and support that everyone
has shown towards me all of these years. I love doing what I do-I
haven't had a 9 to 5 since I was 17 years old- and that means the
world to me. I get to do the thing which I love the most everyday
and for that, I feel very blessed!!
Thanks Kerri!! We love your energy and your music!
