| In
the true spirit of what we love most about going to conference in
Miami (minus the Red Bull hangover, sunburn, lost cell phone/friend/shoes
etc) we are devoting this feature to "discovering" a few
incredibly talented DJs and artists! These rising stars are the
ones to look out for... forget trying to figure out which tune was
"the record of conference," these (and Cagedbaby, see
last week's feature) are our DJs of conference!
Below you'll find their answers to the questions you'd be asking
if you ran into them at some pool party or while looking for a taxi
at sunrise... ok maybe not quite so coherently, but that's why we're
asking for ya!
What is your all-time craziest Miami conference memory?
DJ EXACTA: playing in 2004 on the space terrace
at 9am till noon. I was half asleep and my friends had to dump a
bucket of ice water on my head to keep me going. It was actually
a great set but I wont use the ice water trick ever again.
BODYROX (Nick Bridges): Discovering Joe's Stone
Crab Restaurant for the first time. Thanks to our publicist
Ruchie for the tip-off!
KATE LAWLER: Favourite memory has got to be the
night we went to M_NUS @ Pawn Shop - The most unique and amazing
club I've ever been to. Richie Hawtin played one of the best sets
I've heard and I didn't leave til the end. I didn't do anything
that crazy maybe next year....
How many years have you been going? DJ EXACTA: I have been going for the past 12 years. It never
gets old, each year is completely different!
BODYROX: 8 years, although we haven't been every
year.
KATE LAWLER: It was my first time this year!
One thing you wished you done (or not done) this time around?
DJ EXACTA: I wish i would have more time to relax
during the day. It was just so hectic running around trying to get
everything done and then play at four parties in four days. At least
I saw the beach from my hotel window.
BODYROX: We wish we'd got some sleep - we've
been useless since we've got back... and we wish we hadn't taken
our girlfriends. Oh, and wish we hadn't just written that if they
are reading this.
KATE LAWLER: Wish I'd done: Went to Space. :-(
Was too ill to go though. Wish I hadn't done: Gone running on the
beach the first day. I saw a dead body it was horrible :-(
What were you there to accomplish? Did that happen?
DJ EXACTA: My goal was to hit as many parties
as possible and destroy all the parties I played. I also wanted
to meet many of the overseas artists I have been working with under
my label, Compulsive Music. I met and hung out with Peter Gelderblum
when I played at the Clevelander pool party and also Patric La Funk
who I only have spoken to online previously. I was able to get great
exposure by playing @ Cameo for the Pure Pacha NY vs. Ibiza party.
It was a great gig. I went on right after Pete Tong. He was amazing
and I kept the vibe going after his set. He hung out for awhile
during my set, which was really cool. Compulsive Music's party downtown
on Tuesday was excellent. It was one of the Official WMC events
of the night. That was a huge honor to have my label's party be
picked out of dozens of other parties that night. We had 12 artists
including: Dove, Disciple, Noir, Eric Kupper, Armand Pena, Sydeny
Blu and myself.
BODYROX: 5 days without sleep, we only managed
4 - although technically Nick was unconsciousness not asleep!
KATE LAWLER: I wanted to go to Miami to experience
the parties and see some of the best DJ's in the world. Unfortunately
the weather was raining cats 'n' dogs and I was ill for the pretty
much the entire conference so I didn't get to see/hear as much as
I'd of liked to.
Biggest tune you heard/played/made?
DJ EXACTA: I went crazy for 'Umbrellas' by Angello
and Ingroso. I was happy to get stellar feedback from my new artist
track "Stuck On Your Love". I put the track on 'Compulsive Music's
2007 WMC Sampler', and since then I have been getting an insane
amount of requests for it."
BODYROX: Bodyrox 'Pretty Dirty Thing'
KATE LAWLER: Heard a lot of Claude Von Stroke
productions that were always well received. 'Warrior' is my fave.
Did you sleep?
DJ EXACTA: Crazy enough this time around I actually
slept at least 6 hours every night.
BODYROX: Not enough.
KATE LAWLER: Yes, more than I expected!
Shout outs for what you have coming up release or gig wise?
DJ EXACTA: I am very excited about Compulsive's
next release "L.O.V.E. Machine" by Big Fish, and for my artist album
ahead in the fall of 2007. This summer is going to be great gig
wise. I am definitely looking forward to touring with dates in places
like Hungary and China. Plus, I always love playing at Pacha in
NYC.
BODYROX: Checkout www.bodyrox.co.uk
or myspace.com/djnickbridges
or myspace.com/jonpearn
for gig dates.
KATE LAWLER: I'm resident of Sankeys (Manchester,
UK) and really looking forward to this month with Eric Prydz. I'm
also playing for Dusted's opening party @ Eden,Ibiza - which I'm
made up about as ibiza is one of my favourite places in the world.
Looking forward to lots of other gigs which u can see on myspace.com/djkatelawler
And finally... what was the best thing that happened to you
in Miami this year?
DJ EXACTA: The best thing that happened in Miami
was probably my night at Cameo. It was just a great event for me
and a lot of fun and partying.
BODYROX: We played for MN2S at the Opium Garden
which was wicked and caught up with a lot cool friends who we haven't
seen for a while
KATE LAWLER: Meeting Claude Von Stroke and Richie
Hawtin and getting my Blackberry back when I went back to Miami
airport on the way home after losing it on day 1. :-)
Thanks and hope to see you in Miami next year!
